Cantaloupes contaminated with Salmonella bacteria have now caused six deaths in Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) revealed in its weekly update on Friday.

According to the most recent data, six Canadians have died following contracting salmonellosis, while 53 required hospitalization.

More broadly, 153 infections were confirmed in the laboratory. Two-thirds (103) come from Quebec, while the others are distributed across all other provinces, except Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Health authorities have been interested in cantaloupes for a month and a half now, following a first recall of Malichita brand melons on 1is last November. Rudy brand melons were then added to the recalls.

Canada is not alone in the cantaloupe problem. In the United States, more than 300 cases have been reported in 42 states, leading to 129 hospitalizations and four deaths, according to data updated Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The overwhelming majority of patients are children aged 5 and under (35%) or people aged 65 and over (44%). These are two age groups most likely to develop complications from contracting salmonellosis, along with immunosuppressed people and pregnant women.

In most people, salmonellosis causes symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Remember that it is impossible to identify foods contaminated by salmonella bacteria since they do not give off a suspicious odor and have no visible alterations.
