Canon has announced the EOS R5 C, a full-frame mirrorless camera that can function as a photographic or video device.
The most important feature of the EOS R5 C is that it can record 8K video at 60 frames per second indefinitely. The clarification is valid because the R5, the model that precedes it, could only record 20 minutes of 8K video at 60 FPS because, if it was done for longer, it would overheat. And while Canon updated the R5’s firmware to record longer, it was clear that the hardware could be improved.
And that is precisely what Canon did with the EOS R5 C. The improvement, however, means that the camera is more robust at the back. The reason is that in that extra space it integrates a cooling system that allows you to record in 8K indefinitely.
Canon also highlights that the EOS R5 C can record 8K HDR in HLG and PQ formats, as well as 4K at 120 FPS in 4:2:2 and 10-bit color without cropping the sensor.
Regarding the photographic capabilities of the camera, the EOS R5 C is practically identical in performance to the R5, except that it lacks an image stabilization system. The sensor is 45 MP and allows you to take pictures at 12 frames per second with the mechanical shutter, or 20 FPS with the electronic one.
If the camera has everything you’re looking for, then set aside $4,499 for March. Yes, it’s $600 more expensive than the EOS R5, but its versatility of features makes it an option to consider.
