During the initial stages of learning photography, a complex camera interface can be daunting. Thankfully, Canon’s thoughtfully designed menu system, paired with user-friendly dials and buttons, allows newcomers to start capturing images right away without feeling overwhelmed.

Despite its compact dimensions, the ergonomics of the R100 are excellent, with the shutter button positioned conveniently for your index finger and rear buttons accessible for your thumb. With larger hands, it often takes time to acclimate to smaller cameras, but the R100 quickly felt natural and comfortable during use.

Image quality
The image quality delivered by the R100 is impressive for a budget-friendly option featuring a cropped sensor (APS-C). While high-end smartphones boast sensors exceeding 40 megapixels, the R100 stands out thanks to its superior sensor size, which allows for enhanced image quality. This is evident in various shooting scenarios.
The image sensor on this camera is significantly larger than those found in any smartphone, which inherently leads to better image quality. Here are two sample images captured with the R100 in varied conditions. The first image utilized the kit lens (18mm-45mm) that comes with the camera.
In the first image, you’ll observe the image quality is quite solid, with only a minimal adjustment made to the white balance. My dog Kylo looks excellent here, and despite shooting in a shaded area, the details remain sharp. Even when magnifying the image, the noise level is surprisingly low given the inclusion of an ISO setting at 3,200.
The ISO was cranked up to 3,200, so getting image noise is almost guaranteed. Look at the first image and compare it to the zoomed-in version of the image below. The noise isn’t much of an issue.
I captured one more image, but I’ll admit, I slightly adapted my shooting conditions. In the second image, I used an 85mm prime lens that features a wider aperture to gather more light. This lens notably enhances the quality achievable through the R100.
It’s worth mentioning that I employed an RF to EF lens adapter to use this lens on the R100, as most of my Canon lenses are EF mount. Nevertheless, the R100 performed exceptionally well.

This 24-megapixel APS-C sensor proved its worth, effectively capturing intricate details. Using a superior lens like the 85mm allows photographers to gradually build towards higher quality optics as their skills evolve and they’re ready to advance to a higher-end mirrorless body from Canon.
How the Canon handles video
Shooting video on the R100 is straightforward, offering full HD capabilities at 60 frames per second, ideal for capturing action scenes. For a more cinematic effect, shooting at a lower frame rate such as 30 or 24 frames per second could provide the desired aesthetic.
If you’re aiming to capture video in 4K (UHD), it’s important to note that the footage will be presented at a narrower focal length since the camera utilizes the central area of the APS-C sensor. While this may seem limiting, it posits a acceptable trade-off considering the camera’s price point.
If you’re contemplating using the R100 for vlogging or live streaming, it certainly allows for such functionalities. However, without a flip-out monitor, vlogging becomes challenging, as you won’t be able to frame yourself during recording. For live streaming, the R100 can easily connect through its micro HDMI to computers using capture cards or HDMI switchers like an ATEM Mini.
My concerns with the R100
While there are only a few drawbacks to note, the absence of a flip-out screen remains a considerable inconvenience. Such screens greatly ease the process of composing shots, especially at unconventional angles.
Secondly, while the APS-C sensor meets general photography needs, shooting video in its highest resolution is always ideal. Although the 4K (UHD) setting is available, cropping on the sensor limits it from delivering the pristine quality typically expected of true 4K footage. On a positive note, the APS-C sensor is particularly advantageous for astrophotography, drawing in additional detail when coupled with a full-frame telephoto lens.
