Canoe sinking leaves 17 dead in Quang Nam: Prosecuting the captain

On February 7, the Investigative Police Department of Quang Nam Province said that it had just issued a decision to prosecute the accused and a temporary detention order for the accused. Mr. Le Sen (53 years old, residing in Phuoc Trach block, Cua Dai ward, Hoi An city, Quang Nam Province) to investigate the crime of Violation of regulations on driving waterway vehicles.

Before that, on the morning of February 26, 2022, Canoe QNa 1152 of Phuong Dong Company, led by Mr. Le Sen, carried 38 people (35 passengers and 3 canoeists) from Cua Dai Border Guard Station to visit Cu Lao Cham Island.

At 13:45 on the same day, the QNa 1152 canoe carrying 39 people (36 passengers and 3 canoeists) departed Cu Lao Cham inland waterway to Cua Dai. Reaching an area regarding 1.5 nautical miles east of the shore, the canoe sank.

After receiving the information, the Border Guard of Quang Nam province mobilized 6 canoes/60 officers and soldiers present at the scene to coordinate with 5 passenger canoes running ashore and 10 business canoes. on the shore ran out to rescue the victims of adrift. At this time, the canoe was submerged in the water with many people still trapped inside.

Due to the location of the accident near the sandy beach and strong waves, it was difficult to access the scene. Direct access to the initial scene with canoe BP 43 0704 and 1 rubber canoe of the border guard, canoes of businesses in the outer circle to pick up the drifting victims when they just escaped from the sunken canoes. Next, there were small fishing boats of fishermen participating in the rescue.

At regarding 16:25 on the same day, the rescue force rescued and brought 35 victims ashore, 4 missing. In 2 days 27-28/2, the bodies of 4 missing victims were found.

Before prosecuting Captain Le Sen, the Investigation Police Agency of the Quang Nam Provincial Police Department prosecuted a criminal case of violating regulations on water transport.
