(Ecofin Agency) – The Cannes Film Festival will launch the events of its 76e edition on May 17. During this first day, the filmmaker Souleymane Cissé will receive a prize for his entire career.
In Cannes, during the first day of the 76e edition of the Croisette, Malian filmmaker Souleymane Cissé will receive the prestigious Carrosse d’Or. The prize, awarded by the Society of Film Directors, recognizes a filmmaker for his entire career. The Malian will then become on May 17, the second African to win this prize following Sembène Ousmane.
With fifty years of career on the clock, the Malian has marked the history of African cinema. Several of his films are cited today as a model in film schools. The most striking is undoubtedly “Yeelen”, a film regarding the clash between two generations of a family, but also of a society, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes festival in 1987. Souleymane Cissé’s film is even the first black African film to win an award on the Croisette.
“Your filmography marked our cinephilia in depth […]. Your courage, admirable considering the dictatorial political climate in which you made your first feature films, Den Muso, Baara and Finyè, commands our admiration.”, declares the open letter of the SRF to the Malian. On May 17, during the presentation of the Golden Coach, the filmmaker with fifty years of career will be celebrated at the festival which had given him his worldwide fame.
