Canelo Alvarez Victorious Over Berlanga, Retains His Championship Title with Unanimous Decision

Sports Desk, Sep 14 (EFE).- Mexican Saúl ‘Canelo’ Alvarez defeated Puerto Rican Edgar Berlanga by unanimous decision on Saturday to retain his three world titles in the super middleweight division.

The fight took place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (USA).

Alvarez, 34, won two scores in his favor, 118-109 and one 117-110, to retain the World Boxing Association, World Boxing Organization and World Boxing Council belts.

The first round was a study, with few punches, the Mexican more offensive, but in the second the Caribbean punished with the ‘jab’ and evened the actions.
Encouraged, Berlanga came out in the third round to make a difference from long distance. He started better, but in the first minute he received a powerful left hook that sent him to the canvas.

Saul went out to kill; Berlanga held on and recovered, but from then on he was more cautious, which Alvarez took advantage of to throw the most punches and land most of them on Berlanga’s anatomy.

The Puerto Rican showed great physical form and although he arrived at the middle of the fight at a disadvantage, in the seventh round he re-emerged with his ‘jab’ and confirmed that he was standing.

‘Canelo’, questioned for avoiding facing David Benavides, with the consent of international organizations, went out to fulfill his promise of knocking down his rival in the eighth round. He tried, but Berlanga defended himself well.

The precise counterattacks, the good defense with the closed guard and the effectiveness with the 1-2 gave ‘Canelo’ the advantage on the cards, against an opponent with guts.

At the end of the tenth round, the two boxers added spice to the fight with loud complaints; ‘Canelo’ finished better in the eleventh round with an advantage at short distance and again they shouted at each other, as if in a neighborhood fight.

Berlanga finished better. He withstood the attacks and made a good impression, despite having lost his unbeaten record.

The bravado disappeared from both sides and as the bell rang they hugged for a while.

‘Canelo’ reached 62 victories, 39 by knockout, with two losses and two draws; Berlanga suffered his first setback, after 22 wins, 17 by knockout.

Previously, Cuban Erislandy Lara defeated American Danny Garcia by knockout in the ninth round to retain the World Middleweight Association world title and confirm himself, at 41 years of age, as the oldest world champion at the moment.
