Lung cancers induced by the atmospheric pollution would be the result of a inflammatory reaction, and would not be linked to a mutation, according to a recent study. While previous work has established a link between cancer and pollution, the process at work in the lungs was still unknown. The researchers worked on the mutation of EGFR (epithelial growth factor receptor), present in humans and already associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. Mice carrying this mutation were exposed to fine particles of air pollution. This exposure made them more likely to develop cancer but did not impact the incidence of cellular mutations. This suggests that pollution does not itself induce mutation but creates an inflammatory reaction that incites cells predisposed to degenerate into cancer.
