Cancer Research UK says it’s important to know the symptoms of the disease because it “can help caregivers and relatives know what to expect” and prepare for what’s to come.

“When death is very close, you may notice some physical changes such as changes in breathing, loss of bladder control, and loss of consciousness,” the foundation says. This is part of “the body’s natural process to slow down all of its functions,” according to Russia Today.

This process is like a big machine that shuts down one last time; All components are turned off and all lights are slowly turned off. As easy as it is to describe this process in words, the experience cannot be described succinctly.

Cancer Research UK adds: “It can be very difficult emotionally to watch someone go through these physical changes. But it’s part of the natural dying process. It doesn’t mean the person is uncomfortable or in distress.” Usually when a patient has these symptoms, they enter a phase known as end-of-life care.

As part of this process, caregivers will accompany them to help and provide relief.

The role of caregivers is to make the experience of death as comfortable as possible for the patient. It’s an experience that too many people share each year, but one that has often been marked by families getting together.

Cancer Research UK also lists other changes that can happen when someone is in the final stages of cancer including:

• Difficulty swallowing.

• Anorexia.

• Unsteady movements.

Noisy breathing.

• Cold feet, hands, arms and legs.

• confusion.

Not all of these symptoms will happen at once or at all, some may catch everything or not at all, and instead die in their sleep.
