Cancer: 50,000 new cases each year in Morocco | Conso news

The number of new cases of cancer continues to increase every year in Morocco. According to the latest figures published by the Moroccan Association of Cancer Registries (AMRC), more than 50,000 new cases are recorded each year in our country. The overall incidence rate of this disease is around 116 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, reports the daily Assabah in its edition of Monday, February 6, citing the same source.

Moreover, the risk of developing cancer before the age of 75 is 12%. These figures, explains the daily, were revealed by the AMRC on the occasion of the first “National Cancer Registry Day”. Several experts took part in this meeting, which was also attended by officials from the Ministry of Health, the daily said. It was noted, among other things, that our country had succeeded in developing specialized public and private hospital infrastructures to deal with the worrying rise in cancer cases.

These experts have sounded the alarm regarding the development of this disease in our country. It is also one of the main causes of early death. It was therefore emphasized the importance of epidemiological surveillance via the Cancer Population Registry, which is one of the pillars of the fight once morest this disease.

Going back to the figures of this association, which was created in 2022, it has been established that all forms of cancer follow the same positive evolution, both in men and in women. Which also justifies this cry of alarm. Indeed, underlines the daily, among women, breast cancer comes first, in terms of the number of cases detected. It accounts for 20% of all cancers of all sexes combined and 38.1% of cancers in women. Its incidence is around 49.5 new cases per 100,000 women. The second most common type of cancer in women is that of the thyroid with a rate of 11.3%, followed by that of the cervix with 8.1% of the cases detected, that of the colorectum with 6 9% of cases and that of ovaries with a rate of 4% of all cases identified.

In men, lung cancer is the most common type of cancer with 25.6% of cases, followed by prostate cancer (13.6%), colorectal cancer (8.9%), that of the bladder (5.4%) and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (4.5%).

Note that the Greater Casablanca Cancer Registry was created in 2004 and, thanks to the support and backing of the Lalla Salma Foundation, this registry has been able to have a long-lasting activity. Since its creation, it has ensured cancer surveillance in this region by systematically collecting data on new cases of cancer.
