Cancelled: Lotto Belgium Tour 2021 – Safety Concerns and Financial Woes

2023-06-07 09:44:54

The ninth edition of the Lotto Belgium Tour (WE 2.1), the women’s cycling Tour of Belgium, will not take place this year. This stage race was to take place from Wednesday 14 to Sunday 18 June.

The organizers might not optimally guarantee the safety of the runners. It is not yet decided whether racing will resume next season. “It is with great regret that I had to give up on our Lotto Belgium Tour. There were big problems for the last two stages. The safety of the runners might not be guaranteed in these stages so it stops. We have tried many other solutions, but were not successful. In addition, the financial situation kept getting worse, so the amount of losses was really too high“, explained the organizer Tom Thienpont.

Everything seemed so beautiful. The course was once more promising, I had managed to convince the sponsors to make additional financial efforts to offset the costs. Until we ran into signaling issues and didn’t have enough signallers. The Saturday race, with departure and arrival in Ronse, takes place partly on the roads of the French-speaking part of the country. There, we did not want to install road signs. In Ronse, with which we collaborate perfectly, we were able to redraw the route, but it was really too short to put everything in order. And then there was our last stop in Grammont. There was a problem with the flaggers. Our stage race takes place at the same time as the Baloise Belgium Tour (the men’s Tour of Belgium). And that day there were many other events that required flaggers. Without them there is no race“.
