In Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, a 20-year-old gathering scheduled for the 7th was canceled due to the Noto Peninsula earthquake. Manami Okizaki (19), a vocational student who was planning to participate, complained, “Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we mightn’t go on a school trip, and we didn’t even have a coming-of-age ceremony. We have no memories.”

Okizaki shows a photo of the kimono she was looking forward to wearing on the 7th at Otori Elementary School in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture.

“If it was true, I would have been preparing to put on the kimono by now.” Ms. Okizaki, who lives alone in Kanazawa city, was on her way home when the disaster struck. Her parents’ home suffered damage, including power and water outages, as well as wardrobes falling over, and she is currently living in an evacuation center.

If there wasn’t an earthquake, I was planning to wear a dark green furisode with an imperial carriage drawn on it. It was worn by my mother Masami (49) 29 years ago. Mr. Okizaki says, “I like the mature feel.” She also prepared accessories such as a golden obi and a bag to match the long-sleeved kimono.

I had planned to take the photo at a photo studio near Wajima Morning Market and pick it up, but the photo studio was closed due to a fire. Even their families cannot see them in their best clothes. Masami tearfully says, “She wanted to see it. I wanted to go and show it to her grandmother too.” “I wish she might get together in Kanazawa (where there was less damage),” she said.
