The arrival of a female Saint Nicholas, planned for December 6 at the town hall of Ghent, was finally canceled, we learned on Monday before the municipal council. “Queen Nikolah” had been announced as an alternative to the traditional Great Saint, but without the stereotypes of yesteryear.

Within the majority, made up of Open VLD, CD&V, Vooruit and Groen, the activity did not arouse great enthusiasm, so much so that we learned on Monday around 7 p.m., just before the council municipal, that “Queen Nikolah” will ultimately not be welcome at Ghent City Hall. More than 200 people had registered for this event which ultimately did not take place.

“Queen Nikolah” is a character created by artist Laura Nsengiyumva, who challenges conventional boundaries between cultures and genres. The objective is to approach the tradition in a different way, explained the city of Ghent. She added that the intention was not to cancel the traditional Saint Nicholas celebrations in the future. The latter thus already appeared in Ghent on November 19, surrounded by a large number of his companions.

The city, however, maintains another activity around this folklore. Children who question the traditional Saint Nicholas and who own books with outdated illustrations and stereotypical images can still exchange them on December 6 for a more contemporary book on the history of the great Saint, taking into account diverse sensitivities .
