Canadian Joe Veleno has been suspended for five games by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and will miss the remainder of the World Hockey Championship.
During the match between Canada and Switzerland, Veleno hit Nino Niederreiter’s leg with his skate while both players were behind the Canada net.
Veleno was not punished on the sequence and it was rather Niederreiter who was chased away a few seconds later. Visibly frustrated by Veleno’s gesture, the Swiss had trouble with the Canadian forward in front of the net and was ultimately the only player penalized.
Canada ultimately lost 3-2 to the Swiss.
The 23-year-old Canadian had two goals and three assists in the tournament.
More details to come.
