“As an organization that champions the health and welfare of all dogs, we take this matter very seriously. […] An investigation has been opened on this subject,” confirms Sarah McDowell, head of government relations at the CCC.

Émy Comeau-L’Heureux owns the Machu Pitou Chihuahua kennel in Sorel-Tracy. She was found guilty in small claims twice last month for selling ailing dogs.

In all, Ms. Comeau-L’Heureux was forced to reimburse $8,000 to two clients, whose animals had to be hospitalized a few days following their adoption.

“The matter is currently being reviewed by the Regulatory Division and will be subject to the full Canadian Kennel Club court process,” said McDowell, who cannot provide further details due to ongoing litigation.

Note that the breeder is still a member of the CKC at the time of this writing, which gives her the title of “good breeder” in the country.

Dead following 9 days

According to court documents, Cindy Scully adopted a puppy from the Machu Pitou Chihuahua kennel in November 2019.

“Very quickly, she noticed that the puppy was sick and had to have him hospitalized. The veterinarian who examines him suspects a congenital disease, or a porto-systemic shunt”, can we read in the judgment rendered in small claims last June.

The canine finally died 9 days following its adoption. Émy Comeau-L’Heureux had to reimburse him the sum of $5,000, among other things, for adoption costs and visits to the veterinarian.

Julie Lassonde also sued the breeder since her dog was seriously ill as soon as she arrived at her home. Her chihuahua, named Henri, was hospitalized with a “severe bacterial infection”. Ms. Comeau-L’Heureux was therefore ordered to reimburse him approximately $2,500 for these problems.

«[Je] wants a change in attitude or behavior on the part of [l’éleveuse]. If such damages are not ordered to her, she will continue to sell sick puppies with abusive sales contracts,” explained Ms. Lassonde before the court, before winning her case.

She continues, despite everything

According to our verifications, Émy Comeau-L’Heureux is still very active on social networks and on the website promoting her breeding.

“Available at a very low price with the aim of finding them excellent families quickly,” she wrote once more last week on the Machu Pitou Chihuahuas Facebook page, to quickly sell her little 12-week-old animals.
