The federal government will follow Quebec’s lead and ban the sale of new gasoline vehicles starting in 2035, reports the Toronto Star.

Ottawa is expected to make the announcement this week at the same time as it will unveil new regulations surrounding vehicles in the country.

The Trudeau government’s objective, however, would not be to force consumers to change their lifestyle habits, but rather to ensure that everyone who wants an electric vehicle is able to purchase one more quickly.

The new regulations, which are expected to be called “Electric Vehicle Availability Standards”, will aim to reduce waiting times for an electric car, a government official told Toronto Star.

“This should help resolve one of the main obstacles to switching to electric: waiting times which are too long,” said the source. We’re making sure the supply gets to Canadian markets, because one of the problems we had with electric vehicles is that we’re competing with other markets where electric cars are being sent.”
