The 2019 US Open champion, Andreescu had never before reached the third round of any of the WTA’s three other major tournaments.

Andreescu, 42nd in the world ranking, hammered 18 winners to win once morest Navarro, 75th.

In the next round, the Canadian will face Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko, who was leading 6-3, 1-0 when American Lauren Davis forfeited their second-round duel.

Andreescu struggled in the first round, needing 2h 30min to defeat 18th-seeded Victoria Azarenka in three sets.

The scenario was different this time and the Canadian is very happy regarding it.

The first match was difficult, I was very sore and tired today. So I was very happy that it ended in two roundsshe admitted following the match.

I was very focused and positive, I used the crowd in the important moments, so I’m happycontinued Andreescu.

She was particularly effective in the first round. She broke her rival’s serve in the first game of the match and was never worried followingwards.

Navarro offered better opposition in the second set. She broke Andreescu’s serve in the fifth game, but the Ontarian played her the same trick three games later.

Andreescu then broke Navarro’s serve for a fifth time in the game in the 10th game to end the encounter.

This is the first time that the Ontarian has reached the third round at Roland-Garros and since the start of her career, clay has given her a hard time. His last two victories at the French Open gave him confidence.

« Sometimes it just takes a good game, and I think that’s what happened to me with my first-round win. I’m a little surprised, but I’m also well prepared. It is important for me, when I am prepared, I can give my 100%. »

Swiatek and control

The defending champion, Iga Swiatek, left only four games to the American Claire Liu (102nd), beaten 6-4, 6-0 in 1 h 29 min, Thursday, in the second round.

Two days earlier, it was on the same score that the Polish, 22 years old since Wednesday, had launched her Parisian fortnight once morest the Spaniard Cristina Bucsa.

In the first set, Swiatek quickly led 3 games to 0 thanks to a double break, before seeing Liu come back to his height. She then put her foot back on the accelerator and has only lost one of the last 10 games.

The score is however severe for the Californian in the second set, since she had several opportunities to break the service of the world No. 1. In vain.

As in the first round, Swiatek especially had to manage the wind which rushes on the central court, a little less Thursday despite everything.

You play once once morest the wind, once with it, you have to adjust. I managed to play better in the second set, that’s the most importantshe said.

In the third round, Swiatek will face the Chinese Xinyu Wang (80th).

The three-time grand slam winner must imperatively reach at least the quarter-finals to hope to stay on the throne.

Rybakina without much trouble

The Kazakh Elena Rybakina, 4th player in the world, also qualified for the third round without incident by dismissing the Czech Linda Noskova 6-3 and 6-3, on the Suzanne-Lenglen court.

The Australian Open finalist at the start of the year has still not lost a single round at the Porte d’Auteuil. She will face Spain’s Sara Sorribes in the next round, who immediately eliminated Croatia’s Petra Martic 6-4, 6-1.

Winner of Wimbledon last year, Rybakina, 23, has improved over her young career on clay, a surface where her large size (1.84 m) handicaps her for movement.

It is [sa taille] my weapon of choice, she confided. But at the same time, it’s not easy to move around on clay. I always have to anticipate my movements and, of course, be patient during the exchanges.

Rybakina had 30 game winners, once morest 16 for Noskova, and the two players committed 26 unforced errors.

I had trouble with my serviceadmitted Rybakina, who was born in Moscow.

Her level of play in recent seasons and her victory at the Rome tournament, less than two weeks ago, place her among the natural candidates for the trophy on the Parisian ocher.

For her part, her compatriot Leylah Annie Fernandez started the 24-hour doubles tournament well following her loss in singles. The Lavalloise and her American partner Taylor Townsend, 10th seed, defeated American Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Italian Sara Errani 7-5 and 7-6 (7/3).

On the other hand, Rebecca Marino lowered her flag in her first round match, as in singles. British Columbian and Zhu Lin of China lost in two identical sets of 7-5 once morest the Chinese duo of Yang Zhaoxuan and Xu Yifan.

Young qualifier Andreeva also advances

The young nugget Mirra Andreeva (143rd in the world), who is playing her first major tournament at 16, also reached the third round by sweeping the French Diane Parry (79th) in two sets of 6-1 and 6-2.

For a place in the round of 16, she will find the outgoing finalist, the American Coco Gauff (no 6).

The Russian teenager has not lost a race so far in Paris, his three qualifying rounds included. In the first round, she didn’t even need an hour to defeat American Alison Riske-Amritraj (85th) 6-2, 6-1. On the Simonne-Mathieu court on Thursday followingnoon, she didn’t last long either. She only spent 77 minutes on the pitch.

14 months ago, Andreeva was not yet ranked. And a year ago, she had reached the quarter-finals of the junior tournament on clay in Paris. His qualification for the third round already guarantees him a place in the top 100.
