The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) “has begun the safety investigation (…) into the fatal event involving the ship Polar Prince”, the Canadian ship from which the small tourist submersible left on Sunday, its president Kathy Fox announced on Saturday.
Such an investigation usually takes between 18 and 24 months, but the BST will try “to go faster, because we know that everyone wants answers, especially the families”, she said. A TSB team has arrived in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador and is “examining the occurrence site and wreckage, interviewing witnesses and gathering all relevant information,” it said. she adds.
Two open investigations
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is the agency responsible for investigating air, rail and marine accidents with the goal of improving transportation safety. It does not comment on any civil or criminal liability. A second, separate investigation was opened by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
Its investigators have “begun to examine the circumstances that led to the death of the five people who were on board the submersible,” Kent Osmond, an RCMP official in Newfoundland and Labrador, announced on Saturday. The latter must make it possible to assess “whether or not a full investigation by the RCMP is justified”, he indicated, specifying that “such an investigation will only be carried out if our examination of the circumstances indicates that federal criminal laws or provincial laws may have been violated”.
The US Coast Guard announced on Thursday that the five passengers of the Titan, a scientific tourism submersible which disappeared in the Atlantic on Sunday, died in the “catastrophic implosion” of the craft.
