Thousands of people now choose to come to Canada over the United States due to various reasons such as ease of entry, government assistance and more.

According to Canadian government figures, in 2022 at least 40,000 people crossed into that North American country to seek political asylum at a border that is not official and is located on a highway without a large police presence.

That was a record number that is creating concern in the authorities because Canada does not have the capacity to receive and manage that number of undocumented people.

In fact, the government specified that last year there was a growth in the population rate of 2.7%, the maximum reported since 1957, because in 2022 it went from 38,516,138 citizens to 39,566,248.

As collected BBC, a day at least 150 people are coming to Roxham road looking to get residency in Canada.

This road has become known because, not being an official border point, there are fewer authorities registering the areaso the ease of crossing is greater.

The route became popular since 2017 and, according to the British media, it was for two specific reasons: the fear of being deported due to the policy implemented by Donald Trump and the message published by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Tradeauin which he said: “To those fleeing persecution, terror and war, we Canadians will give them the welcome“.

Due to the restrictions that were implemented to deal with COVID-19, this route was closed, but the demand to cross through this area never ceased. For this reason, since the measures were lifted more than 16 months ago, Thousands of people without documents returned, explained the publication of the British media.

Canada, friendliest country

Most of the people who arrive in this border area are from Haiti, Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico and even Afghanistan. Despite the fact that they are still detained in the border area, they are usually treated better than the US authorities, the outlet wrote.

However, title 42 and other measures that the government has taken together with Joe Biden they have allowed the authorities to prosecute immigrants if they did not comply with the rule of seeking asylum in a safe third country.

Delays in asylum processes in Canada

Migrants are also facing a growing backlog of asylum applications, which rose from 56,300 in January 2022 to nearly 71,000 in December, a 26% increase, wrote BBC.

Additionally, the outlet explained that applications can now take up to two years to process. About 28% of all orders were rejected last yearwhich means that success is not guaranteed.

It used to take a week for a new asylum seeker to get a social security number. Now the wait for an appointment for the identity document is regarding two yearssaid Maryse Poisson, who works at the Welcome Center, an organization that assists newcomers in Montreal.

As a result of this, many migrants have difficulties to support themselves economically and some have had to go to food banks and receive other social assistance while they wait.

American or Canadian dream?

The truth is that reaching either of the two countries is going to be difficult and the process will be long. In addition, due to the increasing number of people who have arrived in Canada, the United States border patrol has begun to locate agents in that sector and the captured people are transported to Texas to complete their procedure there.
