Canada now becomes the first country in the world to require a warning on every cigarette; the aim being, of course, to encourage smokers to quit and to deter those, especially young people, who would like to start.

The spokesperson for the Quebec Coalition for Tobacco Control, Flory Doucas, said in an interview on LCN that “it was the logical step for the rest of things”.
The measures that had been taken to force the tobacco industry to display the harmful effects of cigarettes on packages, “dated from 2011-2012”.

“They had lost their effectiveness. People got used to it. We hardly see them anymore. It no longer came to look for people or challenge them, ”explains Ms. Doucas.
The filter, used to reassure smokers according to the spokesperson, “does not make it a cigarette that is not harmful”.
“On the contrary, people who smoke filtered cigarettes will inhale more deeply which gives rise to cancers which are more lethal,” she continues.
She is delighted that the government will use this space that the tobacco companies used to promote their brand a few years ago, to today “make a health message”.
This formula seeks to use the product itself to inform regarding the links between cigarettes and diseases such as leukemia, diabetes or, better known, cancer.
The advantage of this technique, according to Ms. Doucas, is that it is more dissuasive among young people who sometimes buy a package together and who are not exposed to the warning printed on the packaging.
“It’s a little reminder, just because we’ve seen the warning once doesn’t mean we’re going to quit smoking or that we’re not going to start, but the idea is to use every opportunity we have,” adds the co-director of the anti-tobacco coalition.
She adds by sharing that studies have shown that the cigarette which carries a warning “is less attractive, it already looks more harmful than a cigarette which did not have one”.
Despite all the measures that have already been taken, smoking and tobacco-related diseases remain the leading cause of death in Quebec.
