Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed this Wednesday (04.20.2022) that Canada will provide Ukraine with heavy artillery to respond to the Russian offensive in the east of the country, although he did not offer details of when the military material will be delivered.
During a press conference, the Canadian leader said that the decision to send heavy artillery to Ukraine comes following the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, asked Ottawa for this specific material.
However, Trudeau was reluctant to offer details of the shipment of that military equipment, which he framed “in the context of an illegal war in Russia.”
The Canadian prime minister added that he has to be careful with the information but that he trusts that in the coming days he will be able to provide more details “regarding what is being sent and what has already been sent.”
Meeting between Trudeau and Biden
Trudeau finished by noting that Canada is responding directly to Ukraine’s main request “at this stage of the war,” in which Russia is attempting to gain control of much of the country’s east.
This Tuesday, Zelensky published a letter in which he stated that if Ukraine had access to all the weapons it has requested from its allies, the war would already be over.
Canadian Deputy Prime Minister and Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland tweeted Wednesday that Ottawa and Washington are working “to ensure that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s regime pays the full cost of his brutal war.” and that Ukraine is victorious.
Canada’s decision to send heavy artillery to Ukraine comes shortly following Trudeau spoke Tuesday with US President Joe Biden and European leaders to discuss Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
