Players from both teams came to the match wearing purple tapes on their wrists to represent gender equality. They also wore white tape with the message ‘Defend Trans Joy’.
The Canadian team plays in the SheBelieves Cup to fight for equal treatment with their male counterparts. Coach Bev Priestman is reportedly set to resign following a dispute with the reigning Olympic champion.
Before kick-off, the Canadian players wore t-shirts with the message “Enough is Enough”. They made it clear in a statement that they will continue to protest until there are standards in our association that ensure equal treatment and opportunity.
The US women’s team says it supports the Canadian players’ protest. The US Women’s Team Association said in a statement that our counterparts in Canada and elsewhere suffer from the same pervasive misogyny and inequality that we have faced.
