According to Western media, Trudeau said at a press conference in Kiev, alongside Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky: “Canada seized a Russian Antonov cargo plane that landed in Canada last year, and began the process of transferring the plane to Ukraine.”
In April, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Schmygal, announced that Canada intended to divert funds from seized assets belonging to Russia to defense and reconstruction in Ukraine.
According to Schmigal, the An-124, which is banned in Canada, was subject to sanctions.
Earlier in the day, Radio Canada reported that Trudeau had made a surprise visit to Kiev, the Ukrainian capital.
After the start of Russia’s own military operation in Ukraine, the West intensified its pressure on Moscow, hundreds of billions of dollars of Russian assets have been frozen, and the European Union has already adopted ten packages of restrictive measures, including an embargo on coal and oil.
