It’s not to forget. In addition to the pack packaging, Canada started to have, as of this Tuesday (1st), anti-smoking warnings printed on the cigarette filters themselves. There is, in English and French, the two official languages of the North American country, “cigarettes cause cancer”. The country has established that all locally distributed brands have this alert printed on their products by April 2025.

Canada became the first country to adopt this anti-smoking measure. Other warnings should further warn regarding the dangers of organ damage, impotence and leukemia. Another six phrases are to be printed on cigarettes by 2026.

The labels will, according to a statement from Canada’s former vices minister, Carolyn Bennett, “inevitable and, together with updated graphic images displayed on packaging, will provide a real and startling reminder of the health consequences of smoking.”

The country follows the goal of reduce smoking to less than 5% of its population by 2035. “Labeling the protective paper of individual cigarettes, small cigars, tubes and other tobacco products will make it virtually impossible to completely avoid alerts,” said a government statement.
