Canada has evacuated 375 of its nationals established in Sudan due to ongoing armed clashes since mid-April, Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand announced on Saturday.

Anand, who hosted a press briefing on Saturday, added that Canada is planning “at least one more evacuation flight” for Canadians and citizens of allied countries stuck in Sudan.

“To date, more than 375 Canadians have been evacuated from Sudan, and some 300 citizens who are still there await assistance from Ottawa,” she noted.

“We will continue flights for as long as possible. But the situation is dynamic and we must continue to assess it to ensure that the conditions remain safe for aerial extractions,” added the Minister of Defense.

Anita Anand said the window for air evacuations is closing quickly, adding that the government continues to assess the situation on the ground as well as other options, including land and sea routes.

She explained that “two Canadian military ships, which were to go to the Indo-Pacific for another mission, were instead ordered to stay close to Port Sudan, in case they were called upon”.

Recall that Canada had carried out the first two evacuation flights Thursday to Djibouti, on board which were 117 people, including 42 Canadians.

Two additional flights were organized the following day, which allowed the evacuation of 221 individuals, including 68 Canadians and six permanent residents.
