Tribute, goal and drama: Canada eliminates Venezuela from the Copa America

Goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau saved two penalty kicks in the shootout as Canada beat Venezuela and advanced to its first Copa America semi-final.

Canada achieved this Friday, July 5th their qualification to the semifinals of the Copa América 2024 following beating Venezuela 4-3 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw in regular time.

Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau made two saves in the penalty shootout at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, of a match that had emotions from the first minute.

Hundreds of fans gathered at the sports venue to watch the match that left two memories for the tournament’s history.

First, Jacob Shaffelburg put his team ahead in the 12th minute in front of 51,000 spectators, most of whom were dressed in burgundy.

Shaffelburg ran over and grabbed Canada’s No. 17 jersey, which belongs to teammate Tajon Buchanan, who was unable to continue in the Copa America following breaking his tibia in training.

The emotional gesture was applauded by his teammates who followed him in the celebrations.

Later, at 65′, Salomón Rondón scored the goal of the tournament when he had a ball at midfield and proceeded to shoot at goal once morest a Crépeau who was far from his goal.

The draw gave hope to the Venezuelans, but all hope was lost in the penalty shoot-out when Crépeau saved two shots.

Argentina will be Canada’s next opponent. Both teams will meet on Tuesday, July 9 at 6 p.m. at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
