Canada has confirmed 1,389 cases of monkeypox, the Public Health Agency of Canada announced Friday.

According to the health agency, among the confirmed cases, 667 are from Ontario, 517 from Quebec, 158 from British Columbia, 39 from Alberta, 3 from Saskatchewan, 2 from Yukon and 1 from Nova Scotia. , Manitoba and New Brunswick.

The provinces are currently waiting for the National Advisory Committee on Immunization to provide advice on whether and how to start a second dose strategy which is expected in the coming weeks.

According to local media, due to provincial shortages, regional public health offices are offering only one dose of the Imvamune vaccine, with a second recommended only for people who are moderately to severely immunocompromised.

Monkeypox is a viral disease that can be spread from person to person through close contact with an infected person, including hugging, kissing, massaging or having sex, experts say.
