The pandemic is over but the coronavirus has not disappeared. Canada therefore approved Moderna’s updated vaccine targeting new variants of Covid-19 on Tuesday and continues its evaluation of other vaccines to combat coronavirus infections, once once more on the rise.

This announcement comes the day following the United States approved an updated version of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, better adapted to the variants currently in circulation.

Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine also examined

“We would all like Covid-19 to no longer exist,” said Health Canada’s chief medical advisor, Supriya Sharma, at a press conference. “But people continue to contract the coronavirus and vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to protect once morest serious consequences, including serious illness, hospitalization and death,” she added.

Moderna’s updated vaccine, targeting Omicron’s XBB.1.5 subvariant, has been approved for people six months and older. Health Canada also indicated that it was “actively” examining Pfizer-BioNTech’s application for approval for a vaccine targeting the same variant, as well as that of Novovax.

Most Canadians have received at least two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, but protection wanes over time. Only a small proportion of the Canadian population has received a booster dose so far this year.

Health authorities hope that the population will be vaccinated in large numbers following a 2022-2023 season marked by hospitals crowded with patients suffering from influenza, Covid-19 and the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) which particularly affects children at the bottom age.
