Leaving the house without our mobile phone might seem unimaginable to many of us – but some of the biggest celebrities in the world do it every single day.
The likes of Elton John, Ed Sheeran, Tom Cruise, Sarah Jessica Parker and Damon Albarn have all admitted they don’t own a smartphone.
Studies show benefits of getting rid of your mobile device, such as reduced anxiety, greater satisfaction with life, and increased likelihood of exercising.
Meanwhile, risks of smartphone addiction include sleep disturbance, fatigue and negative personality traits such as self-indulgence.
Here are nine celebrities who, for various reasons, decided to get rid of their “digital poison” and ditch their smartphones.
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran, one of the biggest pop stars in the world, used to own a smartphone until 2015, but got rid of it permanently shortly following a massive tour.
Speaking to the Collector’s Edition podcast, the star said he used to find it hard to answer phone messages right away, even though he still sends emails on his computer.
“Every few days, I sit down and open my laptop and answer 10 emails at a time and send them off and shut down the computer and that’s it,” he said. “Then I come back to life and I’m not confused regarding it.”
In 2021, Sheeran revealed that he had bought a refurbished Nokia 3310 phone so the NHS track and trace system might access it when he was travelling.
However, the £59.99 phone is not a smartphone – and it is so basic that it can’t even download apps like Instagram or WhatsApp. It’s an example of a feature phone – one with push buttons rather than a touchscreen, plus very limited internet capabilities.
Elton John
Elton John revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! He does not carry a phone, although he does have an iPad so he can use Skype to call his children when they are not with them.

He said: “With my daughter, she felt like she had boarded a cruise ship to the other side of the world on her phone, so I felt really upset. She was completely self-absorbed and I think you can see that reflected in this play.”
Blur’s 2015 album, The Magic Whip, also had its origins in demos that Albarn recorded live on his iPad.
Christopher Nolan
Despite being a futuristic filmmaker, English director Christopher Nolan does not own a smartphone and is even reluctant to use email.
The 50-year-old director of films such as Inception, Interstellar and The Dark Knight said in 2020 that he stays away from such devices because they are “distracting”.

Justin Bieber has admitted that he does not own a smartphone, which he says helped him set “limits” in his life.
Speaking to Billboard in 2021, he said, “I’ve definitely learned how to set boundaries, and not feel like I owe anyone anything.
