BUYA Yahya said that brushing your teeth during the fasting month of Ramadan is makruh.

In fact, this cleric from Blitar said that a toothbrush does not break the fast if it is not swallowed.

Quoted from YouTube Al-Bahjah TV, in his lecture Buya Yahya explained that this toothbrush might be one of the things that breaks the fast.

“This toothbrush goes back to this practical jurisprudence. What invalidates the fast is inserting one of the invalidating fasts is inserting something into the mouth,” he said.

“What is meant by putting it in your mouth is swallowing it. Swallowing invalidates it, as long as you don’t swallow it, it doesn’t invalidate it, for example gargling your mouth during ablution, even if you put ice cream in your mouth, it doesn’t invalidate ablution as long as you don’t swallow it,” he continued.

Therefore, it is best to brush your teeth while fasting before Imsak time.

In fact, Byua Yahya also explained the differences between sunnah and makruh when it comes to brushing teeth.

“The difference is that if it is sunnah to perform ablution, ice cream is makruh. If it is sunnah, it is not a sin to gargle because it is recommended to rinse your mouth. If you gargle when you get drunk, it is fine, it is not invalid,” he said.

“But if you put too much ice cream in, it’s cancelled. Why put ice cream in your mouth, but if you’re not drunk, it’s not cancelled. It’s the drunkenness that cancels it,” he explained.

“The answer is that brushing your teeth doesn’t break your fast as long as you don’t swallow your toothbrush. But if you don’t swallow toothpaste on your toothbrush, it’s the same as ice cream, then it becomes makruh, if you drink it, it breaks your fast. That’s why something tastes like something,” he continued.

When fasting, it is best to fill it with things related to worship until it is time to break the fast.

Here is the intention of breaking the fast:

Arabic reading:

Oh God, I fasted for You, I believed in You, and with Your provision I broke my fast by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the Merciful.

Latin reading:

Allaahumma lakasumtu wabika wa’alaa wa’alaa rizqika afthortu birahmatika O arhamar-roohimiina.

It means:

O Allah, because of You I fast, with You I believe, to You I surrender and with Your sustenance I break the fast (fasting), with Your mercy, O Allah the Merciful God. (Z-12)
