Can Oswaldo Cabrera earn a spot as the Yankees’ starting outfielder?

Oswaldo Cabrera had the opportunity to close the 2022 New York Yankees Major League roster and without a doubt that for this 2023 season he might consolidate with this organization. Less than a week before Opening Day, the Venezuelan is experiencing a good moment in the preseason.

The Creole utility might be part of the “Bronx Mules” roster from the first day of the campaign, but we have to wait if he will be the starter, since the last decision is made by manager Aaron Boone.

Cabrera, for being a versatile player, has the projection to establish himself for many years in the Major Leagues. In addition, in Spring Training 2023 he has put up good numbers that make him compete for a position in the starting lineup, specifically in the outfield.

The 24-year-old player has played as an infielder and outfielder, but the position in which he might be taken into account by the Yankees as a starter is left field, remembering that there is no clear name to defend it.

Aaron Hicks seems to be one of the candidates in the LF, but taking into account the poor performance he has had in recent years, it opens up a game possibility for the Venezuelan.

Even “Ozzie” Cabrera played left field last year in the Big Top, including postseason games.

In addition, Harrison Bader’s injury might be a key point that gives ownership to the youngster born in Guarenas, since in Spring Training he has also seen action in center field, even demonstrating quality with notable plays.

Added to the fact that he is versatile with the glove, Cabrera is also a good hitter and in the 2023 preseason he has shown it, since he has the power to hit home runs (on both sides of the plate) and produce with timely hits.

In Spring Training, he has accumulated 13 hits in 16 games, with a pair of doubles, three home runs, 10 RBIs, three runs scored and an average of .302.

Seeing all these characteristics, he demonstrates and makes it clear that he has what it takes to be a starter in the outfield in the upcoming 2023 season.
