With age, a person acquires not only wisdom, but also many diseases. They bring a huge number of problems, he is increasingly becoming a regular customer of pharmacies. According to statistics, following the age of 40, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases. However, as endocrinologist Antonina Gureeva said, the latest research work found the following pattern: if you start taking small doses of aspirin, then it is possible to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 15 percent.

During the experiment, the effect of 100 mg of aspirin on the occurrence of diabetes and fasting blood sugar levels was studied.

More than 16,000 people aged 65 and over became participants, one of the conditions: they must not have suffered from cardiovascular diseases, physical disabilities, etc.

They received either low-dose aspirin daily or a placebo. An onset of diabetes was defined as self-reported diabetes, initiation of antidiabetic drugs, and fasting blood sugar above 7.0 mmol/L or higher at annual follow-up visits.

Research Details

The follow-up period lasted almost five years, during which time 995 cases of diabetes were registered. About 459 in the aspirin group and 536 in the placebo group.

Compared to placebo, participants who took aspirin experienced a 15 percent reduction in the incidence of diabetes and a slower rate of increase in fasting blood sugar.

While the results look promising, more research is currently needed.
