Methods to stop menstruation for a few days
Currently, there are methods to stop menstruation for a few days. However, it is important to specify that no of them is effective when menstruation is already present.
1. Primosiston®
Primosiston® is a medicine used to stop severe uterine bleeding. Its action keeps progesterone and estrogen levels high.
This prevents ovulation and therefore serves to stop menstruation for a few days. More precisely, for 2 or 3 days. After that there is bleeding. It can only be used on medical prescription.

2. Oral contraceptives
Take two blister packs of oral contraceptives in a row, without a break in between, is an effective way to stop menstruation for the next cycle. This means that a month passes without menstruation.
Typically, the last two or four pills in each pack are placebos. Therefore, they should not be taken, but continued with the first pill from the next box.
This method works similar to the previous one. The effect of taking two blister packs in a row is that estrogen and progesterone levels remain elevated. So there is no desquamation of the walls of the uterus and, therefore, there is also no menstruation. This should only be done with the approval of a doctor.
If you skip the placebo pills and join two boxes, without interruption, it is likely that in the next cycle you will not have a period.
3. Continuous use contraceptives
Continuous-use contraceptives not only stop menstruation for a few days, but for several months. Similar to the previous two methods, the hormones involved in the menstrual cycle are kept elevated. Thus, bleeding is inhibited.
There may be some bleeding during the first 3 months of use.
4. IUD with hormones
Some hormonal intrauterine devices (IUDs) change the lining of the uterus and increase the thickness of the cervical mucus. This is the effect of a substance called levonorgestrelwhich is similar to the progesterone produced by the ovary.
The consequence is a noticeable reduction in bleeding during menstruation, which sometimes turn into a full stop.
5. Injection d’hormones
L’injection d’hormone contraceptive is administered every 3 months. The drug contains progesterone and its effect is to keep the levels of this hormone high. Therefore, ovulation is inhibited and menstruation and pregnancy are prevented.
The absence of bleeding is not always fulfilled. It is more likely that the amount of blood passed is reduced rather than witnessing complete suspension.
6. Contraceptive implant
The contraceptive implant is a small tube placed under the skin of the upper arm. It maintains its effect for 3 years.
Like other methods, it increases progesterone levels, causing bleeding to decrease or stop. It also prevents ovulation and pregnancy.

Stop menstruation permanently?
For multiple reasons, there are women who not only want to stop menstruation for a few days, but permanently. And there are cases in which it is a medical indication to perform a procedure which stops the bleeding.
1. Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove the uterus. This eliminates the possibility of a woman having her period. It is not usual for surgery to be done for the purpose of personal desire, but rather normal for it to be done as part of treatment.
2. Endometrial ablation
Endometrial ablation is a procedure that destroys tissue inside the uterus. This is usually done when a woman has excessive bleeding during her period.
The effect is to reduce or completely eliminate this bleeding. The usual thing is that following the procedure the woman is unable to conceive.
The performance of surgeries of this nature must always be considered under medical advice and with the mediation of a health problem that justifies it.
A few facts to consider
The idea that it is possible to stop menstruation for a few days by taking ibuprofen has become popular. It’s wrong.
Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory with analgesic and antipyretic effects, but it has nothing to do with menstruation. It is only used to reduce menstrual cramps.
It is not convenient to use other folk remedies, such as salt water or vinegar water. They are not effective in stopping menstruation for a few days, but they can cause harm. The same is true with the use of the morning following pill, which alters hormone levels, but does not stop menstruation.
As for substances such as lemon juice and infusions of thyme, cinnamon or licorice, iThere is no scientific proof of their effectiveness.
It is always necessary to consult a gynecologist regarding whether to stop menstruation for a few days. Menstrual bleeding is not a disease, but quite the contrary: a sign of good health.
