A sleeping pill authorized in the United States once morest insomnia would slow the development of Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers want to go further to confirm this promising result.

High dose of the suvorexant sleeping pill

Thirty-eight participants aged 45 to 65 without cognitive impairment tested the effects of a sleeping pill authorized in the United States once morest insomnia, suvorexant. The participants were divided into three groups:

The first received a low dose of suvorexant, the second a high dose, the third a placebo.

This study was conducted by Washington University in St. Louis. The results were published last May in the specialist journal Annals of Neurology.

The sleeping pill acts on the Tau protein and beta-amyloids

The accumulation of peptides beta-amyloids and the transformation of the Tau protein promote the neuronal degeneration, loss of memory and executive functions. Three symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. The study conducted by the Americans showed that the group that received the highest dose of the sleeping pill suvorexant had a rreduction from 10% to 20% beta-amyloid levels. Levels of a modified form of tau protein also decreased by 10% to 15% compared to the group that consumed the placebo.

The action of the sleeping pill to be confirmed

The study conducted by the researchers still needs to be confirmed with a largest panel of volunteers to be representative. In addition, the researchers point out that the sleeping pill is not indicated in the prevention of Alzheimer’s, there too, additional studies are needed on the action of the suvorexant.
