If the Ivory Coast is a “country of hospitality”, Nahoua Koné is the perfect incarnation. This public service accounting assistant from Bouaké bent over backwards to receive guests who, however, were not intended for her. “I love stranger oh!” As soon as I saw the people, I was happy,” she explains. This joy from abroad even led this 44-year-old lady to pull out all the stops. And for good reason !
A convoy of buses full of Burkinabè left Ouagadougou on Sunday January 14, 2024 to follow the Burkina Faso-Mauritania match, scheduled 48 hours later on Ivorian soil. The final destination of this convoy was the private Tussuany college in the municipal district of Bouaké. This college is a stone’s throw from the courtyard where Nahoua, her two cousins and her three nieces live. His household, like the entire neighborhood, went out to observe nearly a thousand (1,000) people descending from the ten buses which made up the convoy delegation, in the early evening of Monday January 15. The first request came quickly: a kettle full of water, toilets and a rug for prayer. Very quickly, she sets in motion her rules of hospitality. Four (04) young girls are the first and happy beneficiaries. While the bulk of the delegation was still looking for a place to sleep, they were enjoying a hot bath and good food with Nahoua. Men also invite themselves into the courtyard. The contents of the fridge are emptied. But the problem is not resolved. The good lady then relieves herself of the bean which was to serve as dinner to satisfy her unforeseen visitors. And it doesn’t stop there.
“When I saw that people were looking for food at night, I told myself that the next morning the need would be greater. With the little money I had, I went to get a bag of rice from the store. I woke up a lady at 10 p.m. to have some fish but as she didn’t have much left, I took three strips of eggs to add. I used condiments from my house and spent it in the kitchen all night. At 7 a.m., the meal was ready and people were able to eat before leaving for the stadium. This is how she worked to solve an equation: finding food for these Burkinabè who came to support their national team. The dish is served at 500 CFA francs but in reality this sum is just a contribution to replace the sum invested. “When someone comes I serve them and if they are not satisfied I serve them once more without taking money,” she says. More than 150 dishes were served. The quantity and quality of the meal appeal to the beneficiaries. Compared to this dish, the ¼ piece of bread + a tea for 1,000 CFA francs in the kiosk next door is not a match. Those who win rub their hands and those who came late wipe their tears.
During the day of Tuesday January 16, the Mahoua courtyard was always full. The toilets are constantly in use. Electrical outlets are used to recharge cell phones. Those who plan to leave following the match place orders for plantains, atiéké… In the evening, the line remains long for the shower. Some who came to express their gratitude to their benefactress, wanted to be reassured of her availability for the rest of their stay. But this one is categorical: “It’s good oh! Since the others know regarding you, they will put you in their program now. I’m going to work.” Will she hold out? Not so sure. At least, that is the faith of those who benefited from his largesse. After all, aren’t they on the
