2023-10-12 21:32:59

Senegal, defending champion, inherited the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon while Morocco, semi-finalist of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, finds itself in a very affordable group, following the CAN-2024 draw carried out on Thursday in Abidjan.

The Lions of Teranga, crowned following their victory in the final once morest Egypt (0-0, 4 shots on goal to 2) in 2022, inherit a large piece of the competition, Cameroon, in a group C completed by Guinea and Gambia.

The quiet Cameroonian force, which found its essential goalkeeper André Onana in September, might well play spoilsport in this group with its trio of attackers Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Karl Toko-Ekambi and Vincent Aboubakar.

But opposite, the Senegalese of Sadio Mané are seeking the double and remain on an irresistible momentum since their first CAN: eighth finalists during the World Cup in Qatar, undefeated in their CAN qualifying group and victorious once morest Brazil during a spectacular friendly match.

Senegal and Cameroon will be able to get a taste of the clash to come on Monday in Lens, where they will face each other in a friendly match.

The Atlas Lions, semi-finalists at the last World Cup, will be banking on their young nuggets, like Achraf Hakimi in great form at the start of the season with PSG, and Marseille relay player Azzedine Ounahi or even Bayern Munich full-back Noussair Mazraoui, to seek a second continental title following 48 years of drought.

for the Ivorians, difficult at home

The Elephants, although automatically placed in hat 1 for this edition played at home, will have to come out on top to get out of a difficult Group A with Nigeria.

Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea, without any continental title, complete the group.

In Pool B, Egypt will face the great Ghana team, as well as Cape Verde and Mozambique. Nothing to worry regarding the Pharaohs of Mohamed Salah, national hero thanks to his left paw which makes the Liverpool Reds happy.

Algeria will face Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Angola in a group D within reach of Fennecs in search of a third title following that of 2019.

In Group E, Tunisia will face Mali, South Africa and Namibia.

Two of the expected stars of the tournament, Sadio Mané and Achraf Hakimi, also participated in the draw.

Initially scheduled for June and July 2023, the CAN was postponed to be held in early 2024, in order to avoid the matches taking place in the middle of the rainy season.

It will take place from January 13 to February 11 in six stadiums: Abidjan (two enclosures), Bouaké (center), Korhogo (north), San Pedro (southwest) and the capital Yamoussoukro (center).
