Camping is booming in the city

chronicle

There are currently only two campsites in the city with a total of 1,200 pitches. From the traffic office it is said that these are currently very well attended. In July there would be a 160 percent increase in bookings compared to the previous year.

At the same time last year, i.e. at the end of July 2021, there were 15,600 overnight stays at Vienna’s campsites. This year we are already at 80 percent capacity once more. So far, 40,630 overnight stays have been counted, according to Andrea Hansal, spokeswoman for the Verkehrsbüro Group, to “Vienna Today”. This corresponds to an increase of 160 percent in bookings compared to the previous year. However, this year we have not yet been able to achieve full utilization, as in 2019.

According to Hansal, the increased demand is due to the pandemic. People are more flexible when traveling with a caravan and do not have to deal with complicated corona rules such as for flights and hotels.

An average of four days at the campsite

In Vienna there are only two campsites instead of three, following the southern campsite becomes a park – more on that in Park instead of campsite: start of construction in April. On average, the campers would stay four days at one of the two locations in Vienna – i.e. Camping Neue Donau or at the camping site Wien West – according to Hansal.

According to Hansal, the crowds at the campsites are very international. “The Germans have always been very fond of camping, but they’ve really grown a lot. The split was mostly a third German, a third Italian and the rest then split up, but at the moment the Germans are really at the top with over 50 percent.”

Vienna West is being completely renovated

A night at the Wien West campsite costs 27 euros per tent – there are around 600 pitches here. However, the residential units from the 1960s will soon be a thing of the past. The square is to be completely renovated in 2023, said Hansal. New sanitary facilities and a large lounge for guests are planned for the campsite, which is open all year round.
