A camp of Travelers targeted by gunfire. This is what happened in Grâce-Hollogne where several families had set up their caravans in a field in the industrial zone. A complaint has been filed. A couple was arrested by the police. During a search of their home, the police discovered numerous weapons as well as Nazi objects. The man was arrested. He says he just wanted to scare.
There was general panic. Especially the children
In Grace-Hollogne, Wednesday evening, it was the third time that shots were fired at the camp of the Travelers. This mother testifies: “I saw the bullet holes in a van. There was already a good hole. The lady was wiping her caravan and the impact passed right next to her. She felt the bullet pass . It was a general panic. Especially the children. They were terrified. Everyone was in anguish.”
Shooter has Nazi-era artifacts
Travelers then left the Grace-Hollogne site to prevent the situation from escalating.
“A man born in 1954 has been arrested” explains Catherine Collignon, first substitute for the King’s prosecutor at the Liège public prosecutor’s office. “We found a lot of weapons in his home, firearms, cartridges, knives and in the car, a katana. The police also found some objects advocating admiration for Hitler and the Nazi era”.
We must create reception areas for Travelers
In several years, Travelers have been shot 4 to 5 times in Belgium according to Etienne Charpentier, spokesperson for the National Committee of Travelers. “In France, the phenomenon is more important. Every day, this hatred, this discrimination – I might say – once morest Travelers is growing. To avoid these problems, we must learn who we are. As I have been saying since years, the Walloon Region and the municipalities must think regarding making special locations to receive travelers and welcome them humanely.”
Without a criminal record, the perpetrator was released on conditions. He remains charged with unlawful possession of weapons and attempted murder.
