The sauce is in mourning. Camilo Azuquita, the renowned salsa singer, passed away this Sunday, December 25 in his native Panama. The news of his death was confirmed by his daughter, who said that the interpreter of ‘Like nothing’ he was admitted to a nearby hospital where he died.
The cause of death of Luis Argumédez, his real name, is still unknown, but there is no doubt that he leaves a great void in the salsa genre. His nickname, according to acquaintances of his, was given to him in Panama at the beginning of his career, since he had a voice as sweet as sugar.
Camilo Azuquita – trajectory and successes
Luis Argumédez was born on February 18, 1945, in Colon, Panama, and since he was little he had a love for music. At only 15 years old, he signed his first contract as a vocalist with Enrique Lynch’s orchestra in Peru.
In 1966, he returned to Panama and signed a contract with Rafael Cortijo y su Combo, in 1968, he recorded with Rafael Cortijo and Ismael Rivera. In 1972, he travels to Los Angeles, California and tours San Francisco, San Diego and Las Vegas. In 1974, he signed a contract with the renowned Fania All Stars.

Camilo Azuquita was one of the few Panamanians who has a Guinness record, due to the fact that he conquered the world to the rhythm of salsa. The renowned sonero sang in famous orchestras such as Universal, Raúl Ortiz, René Santos and his Conjunto y Alegría de Chachi Macías.
In addition, he has worked with Roberto Roena and Rafael Cortijo, in which he made his first international recording with the Los Megatones orchestra. With Cortijo he recorded ‘Agua que va a caer’, one of his most recognized songs.
He also recorded ‘Azúcar a Granel’, which serves as a tribute to Ismael Rivera, and in 1996 he recorded ‘Los Originales’ with Papo Lucca. Azuquita was always active in the musical field, but in recent months he has been inactive due to health complications.
Among his best-known songs are ‘As if nothing’, ‘Borombon’, ‘Shingalin En Panama’, ‘Secret lovers’, ‘Sowed with pleasure’, ‘Don’t turn off the light’, among others.
