Camille Rast delivered a superb performance during the Kranjska Gora slalom, won by Petra Vlhova. The 24-year-old Valaisanne finished in 4th place, equaling her best World Cup result.
Eleventh following the initial round, Camille Rast certainly did not think she would fall short of the podium when she crossed the finish line on Sunday followingnoon. She then took 2nd place, behind the surprising American AJ Hurt. In the end, he only missed 0”30 to collect his first podium, two years following his 4th place obtained in Schladming in slalom. Three tenths of a second that she probably lost by making a small mistake a few steps from the line.
Rast, who conceded 1”17 to Petra Vlhova in the end, scored her first top 10 since her 6th place obtained on January 4, 2023 in the Zagreb slalom. And to think that she had to have a few stitches put in her head following being injured by… the trunk of a bus this week.
Vlhova returns to Shiffrin
Michelle Gisin, who scored her first podium of the season in Lienz (3rd), did not confirm this achievement. The Obwalden must be satisfied with a 10th rank. However, she held up the shock on the second course, unlike Mélanie Meillard (22nd) and Nicole Good (24th).
In the lead following the first round, like the day before as a giant, Petra Vlhova this time mastered her subject on the second route. The Slovak, 4th on Saturday, won with 0”72 ahead of Lena Dürr (2nd) and 0”87 over AJ Hurt. She thus comes back to five points behind Mikaela Shiffrin (eliminated in the morning) in the discipline rankings.
With 31 successes in total, Petra Vlhova also equals Erika Hess, whom the Slovakian now leads in the number of slalom World Cup victories (22, compared to 21 for the Nidwalden). Only Mikaela Shiffrin (56 successes), Marlies Schild (35) and Glarus resident Vreni Schneider (34) did better in the specialty.
