At the much-anticipated opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, South Korea was known as North Korea, with athletes taking a cruise ship along the Seine River instead of entering a stadium for the first time in history.

About 50 Korean athletes participated in the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics held along the Seine River in Paris, France on the 27th (Korean time) as the 48th among the 206 participating countries. The Olympic order is usually arranged alphabetically by the language of the host country, but South Korea ranks 48th, just behind the Cook Islands, because the French spelling (Corée) begins with “C”.

The problem arose the moment Korean players were introduced. The announcer at the scene first introduced South Korea as “République populaire démocratique de corée” in French, and then repeated “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea” in English. Both refer to North Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) in French and English respectively.

The official names of South Korea are “République de corée” in French and “Republic of Korean” in English. Subtitles on the broadcast screen are displayed correctly.

North Korea is the 153rd country to enter the country according to the French spelling of its name. The announcer at the scene seemed to realize that South Korea had made a mistake in its entry and introduced the correct name of North Korea in French and English. Audiences who were unable to watch the video of the opening ceremony and could only hear it with their own ears learned that only North Korea and not South Korea participated in the two Paris Olympics.

According to Yonhap News Agency’s report that day, the Korean Sports Council is holding an emergency meeting to discuss response measures. A source from the sports association told Yonhap News Agency: “We only learned of the incident late in the opening ceremony and reported it to the competent authority, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.”
