Calligraphers presenting Islamic calligraphy on panels through wooden art

Nasir Sheen hails from Saidu Sharif in Swat and does traditional Islamic and cultural style calligraphy through ‘Wooden Art’.

Nasir says that ‘I have been fond of art since childhood, think that wooden art was included in my DNA because my father was also an artist, because of that he felt and was influenced by the surrounding environment. And presented it to the people through art.’

“I was most impressed by the wooden art because it is abundant in Swat and exists in different forms in different places like in our old cupboards, on doors, mosques, houses and rooms you find on wood,” he said. A work of art will be found and seeing that I gave it a new shape and presented it in a new way.’

He said, ‘At first I was facing a lot of difficulties, but later an idea came that why not combine different things and present them in front of people on a panel. You guys must have noticed that most of the wooden art is on the same subject, I combined different subjects and adjusted them on one panel.

‘If there is Islamic art, I have presented it by combining Islamic calligraphy with tiles from Islamic historical buildings and other objects on a panel that attracts the viewer.’

Nasir Shan said that he has participated in national and international exhibitions and also participated in the exhibition of Pakistan Army and Hunar Kada.

“There have been exhibitions at the international level in Saudi Arabia and the Emirates, in which I have participated.”

He said that ‘I work more on Islamic calligraphy and I have also focused on our Pashtun traditions. Has also worked on child education with Pashtun traditions, and different attitudes of the society.’

He said that Pakistan Army buys more art pieces from us. ‘I have produced and produce a lot of artwork for them, they are in high demand.’
