Eight organizations join their voices and issue a joint call against the installation of an Offshore Wind Park in the Gulf of Patras.
They are the following: Municipal Authority of Patras, Labor Center of Patras, Labor Center of Agrinio, Labor Center of Amalia, Labor Center of Zakynthos, Labor Center of Kefalonia – Ithaki, Federation of Agricultural Associations of Aitoloakarnania and Association of Professional Fishermen of the Aitoliko-Mesolongi Lagoon “TO AETOLIKO”.
Specifically as stated in the call: “We address an open call for battle and struggle to all workers and their unions, to the pensioners, to the thousands of unemployed, to the associations of fishermen, farmers against the plans to install a giant wind farm in the Gulf of Patras, which is being attempted by the government within the framework of the National Program for Offshore Wind Farms, prepared by the Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company SA (EDEFYEP).
We are calling on the self-employed associations, women and youth in our area, cultural and sports associations, every grassroots body to coordinate our racing pace to get the government to take back the plans for the floating Wind Farms which will have tragic consequences in the lives of the inhabitants of the area, destroying its natural beauty, but also with serious consequences on the coasts, in the lagoon of Messolonghi-Aitolikos in terrestrial Natura zones, as a whole in the marine wealth of the Gulf of Patras, the marine environment, the ecosystems.
In the specific facilities, especially for the Gulf of Patraikos, more than 50 huge wind turbines, with a total power of 695 MW, are planned, which will be added to an already burdened environment, with installed and licensed wind turbines in the surrounding mountains and slopes of Patraikos, both in Achaia and in Etoloakarnania.
At a time when our workers and people are moaning about precision and electricity increases, the government, with the wishes of the EU, is “subsidizing” large energy groups to place their facilities everywhere, in seas and mountains, while at the same time in the context of the policy “liberation of energy”, to sell the electricity they produce at a high price, increasing their profits.
We are preparing a decisive mass coordinated and combative combat response. Our struggles can cancel the installation plans of the Offshore Wind Farms, just as they put a brake on the installation of wind turbines from Platani, Tseleika and Agios Vasilis of the Municipality of Patreon, but also in Erymanthos.
Whatever our people won, they won with their struggles!
We claim:
• No development of floating or fixed-base Offshore Wind Farms (OWFs) in the Gulf of Patras.
• The mountains, the beaches, the natural environment of our region should not be handed over to business groups.
• Cheap electricity for ordinary households, no power outages for working-class families, small professionals and farmers.
• Substantial protection of the environment and the natural wealth of the area.
We call on all unions and associations, the mass organizations in each city to meet immediately and participate in the meeting of all organizations on Friday, October 4 at 6:00 pm. in the hall of the Labor Center of Patras, in order to organize a rich plan of action and coordination of our competitive pace”.
