‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ taken offline due to hackers

It’s hard to imagine a worse scenario for a video game publisher as big as Activision; one of its most prestigious games serves as a viral infection belt to hundreds of thousands of players who are just waiting to be entertained.

Concretely, hackers infect players of Call of Duty with malware that spreads itself through the popular game’s own network.

This malicious program automatically spreads in online game lobbies. Activision said she had to place Call of Duty offline to investigate how self-spreading malware is infecting the game. Presumably, all of Activision’s cybersecurity staff are on the case.

On several sites dedicated to the case, we discover that on June 26, a user of a forum Steam alerted other players to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 that hackers “attack using hacked lobbies”, and suggested using an antivirus.

A computer worm that spreads easily

The malware in question here, autonomous and parasitic, is capable of reproducing itself. Unlike computer viruses, computer worms do not need a host program to reproduce. Autonomous, they move in the computer memory, which they gradually overload and undermine, consuming, sometimes to the point of paralysis, the resources of the computer system. (GDT)

Bugs involved

It is unclear why hackers spread this malware. As the worm automatically spreads from infected player to infected player in online lobbies, this means hackers were able to find and exploit one or more in-game bugs to execute malicious code on other players’ computers.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was launched by gaming giant Activision in 2009, but it still has a small community of online gamers.
