The Call of Duty franchise is one of the most lucrative in video games. As it celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, Activision president Rob Kostich looked back on the success of the games and spoke regarding the future of the brand in an interview with GamesBeat.

Games planned until 2027

Asked in particular regarding the latest installments of the license and especially the periods crossed throughout its existence, the president of Activision explains that the teams are constantly in the “planning phase”, and that there are currently games planned until ‘in 2027:

We are constantly in our planning phase, our long-term planning phase. Right now we have games planned until 2027 for things we’re working on.

He also explains that Activision has learned lessons from each game in the series and that titles set in “contemporary environments or in the near future” are generally the “sweet spot” for the success of games with players:

We learned. I think we made a lot of plays in the future. We’ve probably gone as far as we can. We have made some games in the past. Over time, you start to see the sweet spot and what really resonates with the community.

Games like Modern Warfare and Black Ops are very popular. We’ve certainly had other games that have done very well, like Sledgehammer’s original World War II game in 2017 which did very, very well too.

Kostich also claims that the release of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 in 2009 really propelled the series into another stratosphere in terms of impact and popularity, and that the launch of Warzone as free-to-play during the pandemic also had a very strong impact.

Weapons play a key role

As we know, some episodes work better than others, and the era in which the games take place is a very important point in its annual success.

First focused mainly on the Second World War, the Call of Duty franchise today mainly offers modern conflicts which give teams more flexibility, particularly in terms of weapons, which play a key role in the success of the games:

I think at the end of the day, for us, weapons are an extremely important part of the Call of Duty game. You also have to think regarding what this allows you to do from a narrative point of view, whatever the era in which you find yourself.

The difficulty is that when you get into World War II or even before, there’s less flexibility when trying to maintain a somewhat realistic tone, which is important for Call of Duty.

[…]

Once you enter the modern era, you have a lot more flexibility. If you go a little further into the future, you have even more flexibility when it comes to weapons.

With games currently planned until 2027, more than 3,000 developers are currently working on the series.
