Call for strike Thursday February 1: what teachers are demanding

“The new minister of National Education denigrates public schools as soon as he takes office to advertise hyper-selective private education. On strike on February 1 for the public education service!” launched the Sud Education union in mid-January. In reality, the teachers’ strike this Thursday, February 1 had already been announced at the beginning of the month. A movement “unitary” where now the teachers demand the replacement of the Minister of National EducationAmélie Oudéa-Castéra, details TF1. If the SNUipp demands the replacement of the minister – “National Education deserves better than a simple attachment to the Ministry of Sports” –, on its website, the SNES-FSU union adds: “The first words of the new Minister of National Education […] directly targeted the public school and its staff.”

But these are not the only demands. Because teachers are also demanding increases in salary and one stop job cuts. The FSU-SNUipp requires “means, respect and educational freedom”. And among the salary demands are those of AESH (supporters of students with disabilities) who are asking for a reduction in their workload. The unions also point out the non-replacement of teachers in public schools, but also the problems of social diversity between the private and public sectors.

The “clash of knowledge” announced by Gabriel Attal does not pass

A problem to which the minister has already tried to respond since taking office: she notably promised to “address the question of absences not replaced» as well as undertaking a “redesign of initial training” for teachers and “revaluation of career environments”. More generally, some unions want a salary increase of 300 euros net per month without compensation, but the teachers did not appreciate Gabriel Attal’s announcement, when he was still minister, of a necessary “shock of knowledge” either. A “fundamental attack” against the school and the teaching profession, according to them, which carries measures hindering “pedagogical freedom”.
