According to the information in Circular 018 of October 2024, Cali is not among the high-risk municipalities, but control actions are required due to having the virus-transmitting vector, Aedes aegypti, in circulation.
“We want to send a message of tranquility and calm to the people of Cali in the face of the announcement of the national alert for yellow fever, in the city of Cali and in Valle del Cauca we still have no reported cases and we are working on intensified epidemiological surveillance. strengthening the hospital network and vaccination processes,” reported Carlos Eduardo Pinzón Flórez, undersecretary of Health Promotion, Prevention and Social Production.
Public Health is carrying out intensified epidemiological surveillance at the city’s land and air entry points, with the aim of identifying in time the people who have had close contact with the cases registered in Tolima and at the national level.
In addition, a process of training, induction and technical strengthening of the service provision network was initiated for the identification of signs, symptoms, diagnosis and confirmation of the same at the point.
Likewise, the ‘Vaccinate my environment’ strategy will be carried out, so that citizens come to be vaccinated against the virus. When the biological is applied, 99% immunity is achieved from day 10 and only one dose is required for the entire life.
The organization invites Cali residents to take into account the following recommendations:
- All national or international travelers who need to travel to high-risk departments or municipalities must receive the yellow fever vaccine at least 10 days before entering the area.

What is yellow fever?
It is a viral, infectious disease, with sudden onset and acute course, whose severity can vary between a subclinical infection or mild symptoms to a severe jaundiced hemorrhagic disease; which can compromise different organs and lead the patient to death in short periods of time.
The yellow fever virus is an arbovirus of the genus Flavivirus transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes related to urban transmissions, Haemagogus and Sabethes related to jungle transmission, with high epidermal power and lethality greater than 50%.
For this disease there is no cure or specific treatment, for this reason the primary prevention measures for transmission are vaccination and integrated vector management.
The symptoms of yellow fever are: fever, headaches, jaundice, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting and fatigue.

**Interview with Carlos Eduardo Pinzón Flórez, Undersecretary of Health Promotion, Prevention and Social Production in Cali**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Undersecretary Pinzón. There’s been a recent alert about yellow fever in Colombia. Can you explain what steps the Cali Health Secretariat is taking in response to this situation?
**Carlos Eduardo Pinzón Flórez:** Thank you for having me. In response to the Ministry of Health’s alert regarding yellow fever, we are implementing several containment and prevention measures to protect the citizens of Cali. While we are currently not classified as a high-risk municipality, it’s crucial that we remain vigilant. We have the virus-transmitting vector, Aedes aegypti, present in our area, so we are enhancing our epidemiological surveillance and bolstering our hospital network and vaccination efforts.
**Editor:** That’s reassuring to hear. What specific actions are being taken to ensure early detection of any potential cases?
**Carlos Eduardo Pinzón Flórez:** We are conducting intensified epidemiological surveillance at all entry points to the city, both land and air. This allows us to monitor individuals who have had contact with confirmed cases in other regions like Tolima. It’s important for us to identify and manage potential cases quickly.
**Editor:** You mentioned a vaccination drive called ‘Vaccinate my environment.’ Can you tell us more about it?
**Carlos Eduardo Pinzón Flórez:** Absolutely. The ‘Vaccinate my environment’ strategy encourages citizens to come forward for vaccination against yellow fever. The good news is that one dose provides 99% immunity starting on day ten, and it lasts a lifetime. We want to ensure that as many people as possible are protected.
**Editor:** Are there any messages you’d like to convey to the residents of Cali?
**Carlos Eduardo Pinzón Flórez:** Yes, I want to reassure the people of Cali that we currently have no reported cases of yellow fever in our city or in Valle del Cauca. We are fully committed to keeping it that way and are taking all necessary precautions. I urge citizens to get vaccinated and stay informed about the disease to help us maintain a safe environment.
**Editor:** Thank you for sharing this important information, Undersecretary Pinzón. We appreciate your efforts in keeping the community safe.
**Carlos Eduardo Pinzón Flórez:** Thank you for having me. It’s important that we all work together to combat this
