Caledonian Emma Terebo rising star of French swimming

Having left for 4 years to study in the United States, the 23-year-old swimmer joined Insep in September 2021 with the aim of going to the world swimming championships in Budapest and the European championships in Rome. Successful bet.

She was thinking of stopping high-level swimming by participating in the elite French championships in Chartres last June. Then return to New Caledonia with the project in mind of starting a master’s degree in management in Australia. In the end, she will never take off for the Caillou and finds herself, somewhat by chance, rubbing shoulders with the highest level of her discipline, with a new challenge.

This is Michel Chrétien, trainer at Insep (The National Institute of Sport, Expertise and Performance) who spotted her in Chartres: “Emma had no coaching for the French championships. She asked me to follow her during this competition and while discussing her future projects… It was quite vague as far as swimming was concerned. I offered him to join us at Insep, to try out to possibly participate in the world championships and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. So our coach-trained story began in September 2021.”

Today, du waking up at bedtime, Emma does the lengths. Ranked 7th at the 2021 French championships, she climbs on the 1st step of the podium a year later, during the 2022 edition, and became the best French woman in the 100m backstroke. Adopting this intensive pace was not too complicated for the young woman:I thought I would take more time to get used to the rhythm. I was really very motivated when I arrived at Insep. After two weeks, a month, I was in. Luckily I decided to take a break for my studies otherwise it would have been a bit much.”

This adaptation was also facilitated by the framework offered by Insep to athletes: “It’s the perfect place I found in France to improve my performance. This is possible thanks to the infrastructurehigh-level coaches who push us every day and a group that has already performed at international level. I am internal so everything is at hand. It’s very useful.”

In seven months, the results are there. A double qualification at the world and European championships obtained thanks to his performances at the French championships in Limoges last April. For his trainer: “She is a promising young swimmer. She is very communicative, with a very kind but determined background. She has ambition now. I put it on the 200 meters. I think she’s a sportswoman who has a lot of endurance and she’s a very endearing young girl. She transforms extremely quickly what she is told outside the pools in the water.” Objectives for the summer deadlines: “At the world championships, Emma can be among the potential semi-finalists. If she stays on this dynamic in Paris.”

Promising return for Emma Terebo, she who almost turned her back on swimming. Her family, whom she has not seen for two years, will come to support her in Romefor the Worlds, from August 11 to 21
