The Caxamarca culture settled in northern Peru, in the current department of Cajamarca. It was so extensive that it covered the Amazon region up to the mountain ranges of La Libertad and the north of Áncash.
The pre-Inca center of Cajamarca developed in the area occupied today by the provinces of Cutervo, Chota, Santa Cruz, Hualgayoc, San Miguel, Celendín, Contumazá, San Pablo, San Marcos, Cajabamba and Cajamarca, in the department of Cajamarca and in Huamachuco and Otuzco, in La Libertad.
