Celebrating Female STEM Stars: WONNOW Awards Recognize Spain‘s Brightest Minds
For the seventh consecutive year, the WONNOW Awards have shone a light on the remarkable achievements of 16 exceptional female students pursuing STEM degrees (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in Spain. Launched in 2018, this prestigious initiative, a collaboration between CaixaBank and Microsoft, celebrates not only academic excellence but also the multifaceted accomplishments of these young women in their professional, personal, and social spheres.
Sara Cobelo, a bright talent from Guadalajara, is among this year’s inspiring recipients. A student of Physical Sciences and Theoretical Physics at the Complutense University of Madrid, Sara is currently expanding her knowledge further with a master’s degree in Data Science at the Autonomous University of Madrid. She, along with 15 other extraordinary women, has been recognized for her outstanding academic record and for the significant contributions she is making beyond the classroom.
The WONNOW Awards have witnessed a remarkable surge in participation since their inception. This year marked a new record, with 1,078 applications, quadrupling the number received in the inaugural year. This growing interest is a testament to the initiative’s impact and its crucial role in encouraging and empowering women to pursue careers in STEM fields.
Since its creation in 2018, more than 4,800 students from all over Spain have participated in the WONNOW Awards. In this latest edition, a participation record has been broken again, with a total of 1,078 applications, which represents quadrupling the participation figure of the first year.
The percentage of women in scientific and technological jobs out of the total number of employed women in Spain is 5%. In men, that figure reaches 13%. We must continue working to accelerate vocations and the incorporation of women into the STEM field, which presents enormous job opportunities.
