Cairo Film Festival discusses how environmentally friendly films are being made on screen and behind the camera

Today, the Cairo International Film Festival held a symposium on filmmaking in an environmentally friendly manner, under the title “How filmmaking can become more environmentally friendly on screen and behind the camera”, within the activities of its 44th session.

The seminar, which was coordinated by the Spanish influence producer Samuel Rubin, was held at the festival’s hotel “Sofitel” Al-Jazeera, in the presence of many filmmakers, in addition to: Bassam Al-Asaad (founder of Greener Screen – Jordan), Myriam Sassine (producer, Lebanon), and Holly Morris ( Director, USA), and Michael Covnat (Producer, USA).

At the beginning, the director, Dia Schlossberg, said that her story with the environment is completely different, through the standpoint of justice, and it is the best way for her to make a change in the public’s awareness of environmental service, as well as to increase awareness and exploration processes, and she also tried, through experience, to touch the field of the film industry. And what can be given to the environment to preserve it.

The Lebanese producer, Myriam Sassine, indicated that she is new to the field of climate, but she has worked in production for 12 years, but on a personal level she is interested in climate change and environmental issues, especially in her homeland Lebanon, which was suffering from a major problem related to garbage in 2010, adding that she It was everywhere in all the streets of the country and it was a frightening scene, and therefore it was an urgent necessity to make a film that deals with the environment, and it was initially short until it became long following development, and there must be an interest in the issue of the environment and sustainability.

Bassam Al-Asaad, founder of Greener Screen, revealed the difficulties he faced, saying: Since our inception, we faced two types of problems convincing filmmakers to work with an environmentally friendly approach, especially since the industry in Jordan is not large-scale, and priorities had to be rearranged, as well as persuading festivals to speak out. About this matter and to be platforms to spread this awareness, to tell viewers regarding this problem that may make it easier for filmmakers to be convinced, and that it is an urgent necessity that must be done now and if there is no planet, there will be no films, and cooperation has been made with many important institutions in this regard.

Director and writer Holly Morris added that she started in the film industry since writing the script, and at first her interest was only feminist, but then her interest in the environment in the film industry increased, and how codes are applied in the film industry, confirming that they did not have sufficient funding for that. .

Producer “Michael Covnat” said that he worked at the beginning of his life in the field of journalism and then in photography, and touched many cultures in his life, and therefore he decided to apply something useful through the film industry towards the environment.
